FISE condemnation statement for the arrest for the arrest of Mahinda Jayasinghe in Sri Lanka

The World Federation of Teachers’ Unions (FISE), member of the WFTU, strongly condemns the unacceptable, brutal and anti-democratic attack on the right to protest and the arrest of Mahinda Jayasinghe, Vice President of the FISE, responsible for the Asia region.

Comrade Mahinda Jayasinghe was arrested by the police because he took part in today’s protest against the destruction of the Muthurajawela wetland, which endangers people’s lives.

FISE demands the immediate and unconditional release of its cadre who was arrested only because he fought for the interest of the popular strata in the western province and throughout the country. Violation of democratic and trade union rights will never be accepted.
